How to Measure Your Cowboy Hat Size

Posted by Everest Ranch on

A cowboy hat that fits right sits level, stays put in a breeze, and doesn’t leave a mark on your forehead. Measuring at home takes one minute.

Measure your head

Wrap a soft tape measure around your head about half an inch above your ears and eyebrows — where the hat will actually rest. Keep it level and snug but not tight. No soft tape? Use a piece of string, then measure the string against a ruler.

Match your measurement to a size

  • 21″ ≈ S (6 3/4)
  • 21 1/2″ ≈ S/M (6 7/8)
  • 21 7/8″ ≈ M (7)
  • 22 1/4″ ≈ M/L (7 1/8)
  • 22 5/8″ ≈ L (7 1/4)
  • 23″ ≈ L/XL (7 3/8)
  • 23 1/2″ ≈ XL (7 1/2)

Between sizes? Size up — a hat that’s slightly large can be adjusted with a foam sizing tape, but one that’s too small can’t be stretched comfortably.

Felt vs. straw

Choose felt hats for fall, winter, and dressier occasions — they hold their shape and shed light rain. Choose straw hats for spring, summer, and long sunny days — they’re lighter and breathable. Browse the full western hat collection to see every style.

Caring for your hat

Handle a hat by the brim front and back, not the crown, to keep its shape. Store it upside down on its crown or on a hat rack. Let a wet hat air-dry naturally, never with heat.
